Who can access the service?

  • Anyone aged 18 years and above
  • Residing in Sandwell
  • Currently experiencing and recovering from mental illness

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 5:00pm

All activities will be coordinated and delivered by our experienced staff team with expertise in mental health-informed practice, skills development, and culturally sensitive engagement.

What does the service offer?

Every individual on the programme will have a personalised career plan focusing on

  • Exploring personal goals, confidence building and motivation.
  • We will help you overcome internal barriers, such as low self-esteem, improving your social skills and preparing you for the world of work, education, volunteering or vocational training.
  • Interview techniques , CV writing and assisting with job searches.
  • Practical cultural cooking sessions with the outcome of gaining a food hygiene level 2 qualification.
  • Opportunities to take part in a variety of engaging workshops such as performance psychology, public speaking and economics to upskill your skillset.

One to one support sessions will take place at the Kuumba Centre with your Job Coach assessing your needs and aspirations – ready to begin your Step Up journey. Our service ensures that participants are supported at every stage-from initial outreach to sustained outcomes, building long-term confidence, skills, and readiness for employment or education.

For those ready to progress, we will offer support in accessing local volunteering opportunities and relevant short, accredited training (Food Hygiene Level 2). Our team will work closely with local employers and volunteer-involving organisations to secure placements aligned with participant interests and goals.
