Through the fire – the history of Black churches with Bishop Desmond Jaddoo MBE!

We welcomed Bishop Desmond Jaddoo to the Kuumba Centre as part of Black History Month – where he carried out a talk to some of our service users on the exploration of the history of Black churches and their role in the liberation of enslaved people.

Black churches played a crucial role in helping enslaved people by providing a space for spiritual growth and resistance against oppression.

  • They offered evangelical preaching that appealed to enslaved individuals, emphasizing messages of spiritual equality and deliverance
  • Black churches became centres of resistance, providing a platform for activism and organising efforts for freedom and justice.

He also expressed his views about the experiences of the Windrush Generation, who were not welcomed in most churches when they came to Britain. This generation was empowered to set up prayer meetings within their homes and progressed to set up churches across Britian.

His speech was empowering and liberating, and we thank Bishop Desmond Jaddoo for his time and knowledge in standing firm in power and pride.
