October marked Black History Month (with this year’s theme being “Standing Firm In Power and Pride”) and World Mental Health Day. This year Kuumba celebrated by holding its first ‘Black Men WILL Be Heard’ Event, which took place on Friday 10th October. It was an opportunity for men to come together and share their experiences as Black men through their struggles with mental health in a non-judgmental setting. The session was led by our external facilitator Edgar, our Men’s Engagement Lead Lloyd and our Counsellor Eddie. Together, their expertise, guidance and experiences encouraged everyone to be heard and speak up – ‘standing firm in power and pride.’ This will be the first of many and we hope more men can attend the next session!
Men’s Engagement Lead, Lloyd said: “I really enjoyed the men’s event. It was my first time hearing how the guys opened up and allowed themselves to be vulnerable, yet were heard and understood by the group – it really touched me. I can’t wait for the next one, as I feel it’s needed in this climate!”
Men’s participant, Ricky said: “Before attending the men’s workshop I was nervous about who would be attending and what will be asked. However, after attending the event at the centre – I felt warm. I met some really down-to-earth guys who have also been through similar experiences, with being raised by a single-parent mother and their experiences on the streets. It really did help me with expressing my feelings, I have been holding back for years.”
